Most E. coli strains live harmlessly in the intestines of healthy humans and animals, but virulent strains, the enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and certain Shiga toxin–producing E. coli (STEC), cause life-threatening infections, with young children and the elderly most at risk.
