Incentives and Disincentives in Organ Donation: A Multicultural Study among Beijing, Chicago, Tehran and Hong Kong (PDF Book)
Author: Fan Ruiping (Author)
This book is the first systematic study of three incentives for organ donation. It includes extensive research in four culturally diverse societies: Hong Kong, Mainland China, Iran and the United States. Based on this research, this book proposes a new incentive model to encourage organ donation in modern society. The model focuses on three types of incentives: volunteer incentives, compensatory incentives, and family incentives.
Commonly used honor incentives in the US and other Western countries include offering donors things like thank you cards and memorial parks to encourage giving out of pure altruism. The Islamic Republic of Iran implements compensatory incentives that provide financial compensation to unrelated living donors in recognition of their altruistic contributions. Family incentives implemented in Israel and mainland China prioritize organ transplants from donors and/or their family members.
The book argues that a successful incentive model should encompass the types of incentives that are actually effective, politically legitimate, and morally justifiable for a given society. This means that the appropriate incentives to optimize organ donation may vary across societies. The insights presented in this book are valuable to scientists and practitioners in the field of organ transplantation, as well as general readers interested in bioethics and health policy.
