The management of temporal and mandibular disorders (TMD) and orofacial pain is a convoluted issue in dentistry. This complexity is derived from the numerous issues that can be associated with the masticatory function.  In order to effectively treat TMD and related disorders of the orofacial region, the clinician must be aware of these disorders and be able to differentiate them from other orofacial pain disorders. This will allow the clinician to choose the most appropriate treatment.  This class will discuss the multiple causes of TMD and orofacial pain disorders in depth.  Sound-based treatments that are based on scientific principles will be discussed.  The emphasis will be on diagnosis in order to determine the appropriate therapy for each patient. This training will benefit all individuals interested in treating disorders of the temporomandibular region.
What You’ll Know:
Distinguish between temporal and mandibular pain conditions from other orofacial pain conditions.
Know the connection between occlusion, bruxism and temporal mandibular issues.
Know the connection between cervical issues and orofacial pain issues.
Gather information on all of the pain’s history and conduct a thorough exam for cases of temporal and orofacial pain, as well as disorders of the jaw.
Understanding the responsibilities of the clinical psychologist in regards to managing orofacial pain conditions.
Understanding the responsibilities of the physical therapist in dealing with orofacial pain conditions.
Understanding the function of appliances for the mouth in treating TMD.
