Osteoporosis, osteopenia, and the importance of adequate vitamin D have been recognized for many years, but their effects on orthopedic injuries and conditions have not been completely defined, and testing for and treating vitamin D deficiency are not currently performed routinely for most orthopedic patients, even though vitamin D supplementation is inexpensive and simple and has an excellent safety profile.
Authors in this issue of Orthopedic Clinics of North America discuss treatment considerations for fractures in osteoporotic bones.
